Our Approach

Approach to learning

"We are so happy that we made the decision to move our son to ISL Surrey. Since joining he now enjoys learning again and he is happy. The teachers are kind and supportive, they make learning fun and encourage individuality.
He loves the outdoor space especially forest school and the permaculture garden. ISL is unique within Woking as a school with a genuine community and as a family we are proud to belong." Current Year 5 parent

At ISL Surrey we believe in an enquiry-based approach to learning where all educational experiences are personalised, making it possible for us to nurture the talents of each and every child.

We map individual pathways in conjunction with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), to ensure that our students are challenged and also supported, when needed.

Small classes and a highly flexible approach allows us to develop different avenues for different children, to ensure each and every child reaches their full potential, but in a non-pressurised way. Here, school is more than memorising facts and preparing for standardised tests - instead learning is a joy and a way of life.

Our students find their own ways to explore their learning through deep questioning and sustained, shared thinking. Throughout their time with us, we focus on the development of critical thinking skills, so that the children in our care develop the rigour and resilience needed to face the challenges of an ever-changing future.

We also pride ourselves on being Global Thinkers.

This means that we are 'big picture' thinkers, proudly rooted in Woking but passionate about engaging with the world around us.

We firmly believe in the importance of real-world learning which we have incorporated into our School Life. We have our on-site Forest School and Permaculture Garden which help support this approach, alongside regular school excursions, residential trips and links with the local area with our Community Engagement Programme.

Our classrooms are relaxed spaces where children's natural strengths are given room to flourish. Students live up to our high standards, driven by their own intrinsic motivation. This motivation sees them embracing any challenges the future might bring.

In order to ensure all students progress to the perfect senior school environment, we provide a tailored transitions programme for the move to secondary, running individual sessions with parents and students. These sessions tackle school selection, the application process and, where needed, test preparation.
